Escalating sanctions

A ladder that climbs with the infractions.

An escalating sanction says: "from N infractions onwards, apply this action".

Building the ladder

Each rung has:

  • an infraction threshold (1 to 1000);
  • an action: timeout (mute), kick, ban, temporary ban (tempban);
  • a duration, for mute and tempban. 28 days maximum, which is Discord's limit.

A classic ladder:

InfractionsAction
3Timeout, 10 minutes
5Timeout, 1 hour
8Temporary ban, 7 days
12Permanent ban

Twenty rungs at most. They are sorted automatically by ascending threshold.

Infraction expiry

Without expiry, a member present for three years will always end up reaching the last rung. An expiry of 30 or 90 days tells apart a member who slips occasionally from one who is genuinely a problem.

Manual commands

The automatic ladder does not prevent human decisions:

  • /warn: warn a member. The warning counts as an infraction.
  • /mute: time out temporarily.
  • /kick: kick.
  • /ban: ban.
  • /tempban: ban temporarily, with automatic unban at expiry.
  • /clear: delete a batch of recent messages.

All these commands require the matching Discord permission, and are recorded in the moderation log.
